Questions to ask your gynaecologist before your wedding

1. Does it hurt when having sex for the first time?

Yes, it hurts a little. Some may even bleed. But that will be temporary. Once you start feeling the pleasure, the pain will subside and you will start enjoying the act. You need to communicate your pain to your partner and if the pain persists, you must immediately see your gynaecologist.

2. Should a vagina bleed to prove virginity?

No. It is an old belief that a vagina should bleed when having intercourse for the first time. This is not true at all. Typically, vagina bleeds when the hymen ruptures. This rupture can happen even when playing outdoor games. So, if your vagina doesn’t bleed, that doesn’t mean that you are not a virgin.

3. What if I or my partner had pre-marital sex with someone else, what should i keep in mind?

Premarital sex has become common these days. It is no more a taboo or you need not be guilty of it. If you and your partner are open, you can talk to each other before marriage about your relationship history. This not only builds trust but helps you avoid relationship problems in the future.  Also, both of you should go for a complete STD test before wedding.  Looking healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that you or he/she are not infected.

4. Your periods are coming in the way of your marriage and honey moon dates. What should you do?

See a good gynaecologist , express your concern. He/She may suggest some medication to delay the periods and change the cycle as per the need. Please do not google and self medicate. This can damage your reproductive system instead of doing any good.

5. How do I take care of my private parts after marriage?

This is very important thing that you need to do after marriage.  Since you will have sexual intercourse more often after marriage, you need to keep your vagina clean, trimmed and dry (on the outside). You must keep yourself hydrated with enough water and other liquids.

6. What are the types of birth control methods available?

1. Condoms – Male or Female condoms are available.
2. IUD – A small device that can be placed in the entrance of uterus or cervix. This is spermicidal and avoids pregnancy.
3. Birth control pills – Either emergency pills or regular daily pills can be used for birth control. Know more about birth control pills.

Note – Emergency contraceptive pills must not be taken often. This can damage your reproductive system.  Talk to your gynaecologist and decide which method suits you better.

7. How much sex after marriage is considered normal?

There is no particular count to call it normal. As long as you and your partner are happy enjoying sex, any number of times a day or week is good. It helps you get more intimate mentally too.

8. My partner wants to have sex during my periods. Is that safe? Can I get pregnant?

Inconvenience/Discomfort and possibility of infection are the two problems to have sex during periods. The waste blood that is leaving your body can have bacteria or virus that can infect your partner.  Leakage of menstrual blood during sex causes discomfort. If this is ok, you can proceed.

Chances of getting pregnant when having unprotected sex during menstruation are very small /miniscule but not zero.

9. Do hormonal changes occur in the body of a woman after marriage?

Yes, since you will have intercourse more often than before marriage, you can expect some hormonal changes in your body. But, they will get adjusted after few months. You may not see any changes in your body wrt hormonal levels if you were sexually active before marriage.

10. When to have sex to conceive?

If you are having a regular 28 day cycle of menstruation, the ovary inside you releases the egg on the 14^th day. (During the middle of the cycle). This egg stays in your body for a period of 24 hours waiting for sperm to join (This is called Ovulation).  You should have unprotected sex with your partner while the egg is waiting. Give a window of 2 days before and after the 14^th day. Having sex during these 5 day period can guarantee your pregnancy provided if or your partner are not suffering from any kind of infertility issues.

11. Pap Smear Test – Should i get it done?

It is important to get a pap smear test done by every woman before getting married. This test screens for possible carcinogenic (cancer causing) conditions in your cervix.

12. What if i accidentally get pregnant, how can I terminate my pregnancy?

Pregnancy termination is very easy when you see your gynaecologist. Please do NOT self medicate or follow home remedies to terminate your pregnancy.
